We had an awesome start to our morning today with an intro to the Science Fair lesson on 'Dissecting Sheep Eyes' to find out how our eyes work. The students had to identify the parts of the eye ball as well as what each of their roles were. We had a lot of fun and look forward to making some movies on this experiment. We will be completing different science experiments in class so that the children gain confidence with what is expected for the science fair. It is my aim to have them complete the majority of these projects at school so as not to burden families at home. The technology component of this experiment is hugely exciting too and some of the boys and I have been discussing ways to create a 360 degree camera helmet to make 360 degree movies..Check out this 360 degree movies on youtube..if you click on the picture you will be able to scroll around the screen. Tomorrowland 360 degree movie. As with any project it is really important for the children to choose a topic that really interests them..if they can get this right they will fly along with their learning.
Yesterday I let the children know about our school speech competition. We will be working on these in class too. For your knowledge, this is what is expected.
Speech Criteria
1: Must be a persuasive speech (Links to our persuasive writing assessments).
2: Must be 3 minutes long (For students hoping to make it to the final stages. Individual goals may differ as for some children just completing a speech is an achievement.)
3: All students will say their speeches in our room in week 6 this term. The top 4 girls and 4 boys will be selected to read at the syndicate finals against rooms 23 and 24's top students. The top students from the syndicate finals will read to our school judges who will then choose the top 4 students across the school in each year and gender level for the school finals to be held on the 30th June.
4: Topic choice is crucial - children must choose something that they are passionate about.
Miss Gee and I would like to congratulate Haylee Law and Giorgia Hart who were the winners of our country project competition. The standard across the two classes was extremely high and we were proud of all of our students for the effort and work they completed. This week has been hectic with children out of class for different activities but we are going to have a small prize giving ceremony on Monday to not only acknowledge these two but a large number of other students for their country projects, optional homework challenges and ANZAC projects. Both Miss Gee and I acknowledge the amazing effort that went into all of these projects and have thoroughly enjoyed reading them all. We will be working on different things over the coming terms to help the children grow with their research skills in preparation for high school. Thank you to you all for supporting your children at home. The winning borough groups from last term will also be having their celebration Day next Tuesday.
Congratulations to Sophie Kelly and Mayer Francis Smith who were acknowledged at our Turanganui hui the other day for being all round outstanding students. Both Soph and Mayer are a pleasure to have in our room and are respectful and caring students. They are both respected members of 22@Gisint.
Today your child attended an immunisation talk from the public health nurses. Every student needs to return their form regardless of whether or not they are getting an injection done at school, at the GP or not getting one at all.
We are working on creating a Lip Dub as a part of our PE programme. The children are working on ideas individually, in small groups and as a class and look forward to sharing this gem with you all toward the end of the term. Today was only our second day on this project and we already have lots of awesome choreography and ideas flowing.
Finally, many thanks to everyone who has emailed to say you can help transport to and from the Mindlab on the 12th May. Permission forms will go home on Monday for terms 2, 3 and 4's visits. Children can bring their $2 in anytime prior to the 12th May.
Have a lovely weekend and good luck if you are starting your winter sports on Saturday.
