Where has the weekend gone? I hope you all enjoyed the weekend with your whanau and got out and about our beautiful district to enjoy some winter sport. This week is an incredibly busy one for a number of reasons.

Turanganui Year 7 Speech Finals
Tomorrow we begin our week with our Turanganui Year 7 speech finals. I was really impressed with the quality of all of our speakers and it was a particularly difficult job to select the class finalists in the girls category. The students who have made it through to the syndicate finals are
- Mayer Francis Smith - Why animals should not be kept in the zoo
- Oliver Lodewyk - All about me!
- Kalais Piahana-Harrison - Why there is no excuse for poverty in this day and age
- Charli Blackburne - Why everyone should have a Belle
- Giorgia Hart - The importance of history
- Jasmyn Broughton - How we can improve Gisint
- Jayda Pellow - Why the country is better than town
- Grace Roddick - Why everyone should hunt
- Emily Horne - How to persuade your parents to get a pet
- Bo Howarth- Jarratt - Why you shouldn't judge a person by their size
On Tuesday the Whakatane Sports Exchange begins with an 11am powhiri at the YMCA. If you are free please come along to welcome our visitors as well as to support our awesome students Jade Vercoe and Rigante Keelan who have key roles in the powhiri as kaikaranga and kaikorero. Our entire school participates in this welcome led by Papa Pura and Koka T. If you are free, please be seated on either side of the YMCA bleacher seats by 11am.
On Saturday night I also had the privilege of watching Papa Pura and Koka T's roopu Turanga Tangata Rite perform their dress rehearsal in the school hall in preparation for their performance at Tamararo on Saturday. Nga mihi nui ano ki a Jade Vercoe who is our only 22'er in the group this year. It was a fantastic performance and I know we all wish TTR all the best for Saturday. Check out our school Facebook page for more information if you are keen to watch.
The Whakatane Exchange
Thank you again to all of our class whanau who are hosting billets on Tuesday night. The billets are being allocated in the school hall at 2:30pm on Tuesday. This will be an exciting exchange for everyone.
Wednesday's Programme
Dancefit Studio's Concert
Good luck to all of the 22'ers involved in the Dancefit Winter Concert at the beautifully renovated War Memorial Hall. I am looking forward to watching on Thursday evening as my daughter has returned after a bit of a break.
School Cross Country this Friday
This Friday all of the school will be participating in our school cross country and I have been encouraging the children to once again dress up in their blue colours to support Turanganui. We want to have a sea of blue out on the field as we cheer on our year 7 and 8 runners.
The course is not a long one but it is challenging enough for our serious competitors and short enough for those just wanting to meet the challenge and have some fun with their mates. It is achievable by all fitness levels. I thank you in advance for helping to prepare your child for this fun event and meet another Gisint challenge - it is a walk in the park compared with the triathlon and the whole class achieved that milestone.
The timetable for Friday is
9:20am Individual Races Start
10:30am Interval
11:15am Team Events Start
12:30pm Lunch
1:30pm Back in class
2:15pm Year 7 Assembly
3:00pm Hometime
We have been completing some excellent work in class that I will showcase on here over the coming weeks. Many of our students have completed their first picture books and are in the process of turning them into audio books. Below are two book reviews on Kensuke's Kingdom written by Tevita Nusi and Charli Blackburne.

Finally congratulations to our Friday Assembly class certificate recipients Giorgia Hart and Bray Scott. Giorgia is a very driven student who strives for success in everything that she does. She always completes work to the highest standard and manages the numerous activities that she is involved in with ease and enthusiasm. Well done Giorgia.
Bray Scott did tremendously well in our class speeches last week with a very confident presentation on Why we should all go on a cruise holiday. If I weren't going back to the states in September I think I might be convinced to give a cruise a go..maybe next time! Well done Bray - we are all proud of your achievement.
Finally I found this very cool poster in the weekend that celebrates the many different personalities that we all have and to embrace these. One thing that I love about my students in 22@Gisint is that we have a wide variety of personalities in our room and yet somehow we gel together perfectly - The world be a pretty boring place if we were all identical. Next week I'm going to find one for my boys although many of these qualities are applicable to them too.
Have a great week everyone.
